Frank Mir: "Lesnar's sickness has thrown my mind for a spin."
by Natalia Baage on November 28, 2009

"The long-term goal for me and my own satisfaction is to take off Brock Lesnar's arm.  At the end of the day, that's what my goal is when I go to the gym and train.  But being an interim champion would get me one step closer to doing so.

"[Lesnar's sickness] has thrown my mind for a spin.  When you go in the gym, you've got a certain goal that you're going for and going for.  Not that he was, obviously, my next opponent, but to face him again was the long-term goal.  The short-term goals being obviously Cheick [Kongo] and whoever else.  Now I've just got to turn it around that the interim would be another short-term goal.

"If Brock Lesnar is unable to enter the cage again, that's going to give me a hard time.  That's been pretty much my drive and focus to go to the gym every day, to change myself and grow as a fighter, is the opportunity to have a rematch with him.  To know that there's a slight possibility that that will never happen, that's going to take me [some time] to wrap my head around it."  - Frank Mir

In their first fight, Frank Mir won by knee bar in the first round.  In their second, Brock Lesnar punched Mir's face into a TKO victory.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Mir (12-4) spoke with MMAJunkie.com about his mindset in regards to a potential third match up (or not) with the current UFC heavyweight champion.

Lesnar (4-1) has been sidelined for a few months - first with a case of mononucleosis, and then with a "mystery illness," which turned out to be a bacterial infection in his intestines.  With a possible return date set for sometime in six months, Mir will look to smaller goals until the day he will be able to finally dispute his reign over Lesnar.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt will face Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 in Memphis, TN.  The event will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez.  Another impressive lightweight match up will feature Clay Guida taking on Kenny Florian.  The main card will be available via pay-per-view.
