Former TUF coach Frank Mir is not pleased with the level of talent on the current season of the show, featuring the 16 heavyweight fighters.
"I don't even know what's going on," Mir said at a WEC Q&A session. "I had to turn it off. I'm being serious. It was bad. Some of the fights were horrible."
The Ultimate Fighter 10 was well-hyped, especially by UFC President Dana White. Before the season premiere, White said that it could be the best season yet. With controversial coaches Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans, and YouTube sensation Kimbo Slice, the season looked promising. After the first three episodes let the fans down, White apologized for the level of fights, saying that they will get better. While the talent fluctuated over the course of the next seven episodes, the viewership records were consistently decreasing.
Mir, who is also a heavyweight - however, a former heavyweight champion - discussed the difference between smaller fighter and larger fighters.
"I haven't seen any fights in the WEC that could ever amount to being that bad, because the lighter guys are just more competitive," he said. "They're in shape, they're more strategic. Even when you go to a college wrestling match, typically, the heavyweights are boring to watch."
The final episode of TUF 10 before the live finale will air on Wednesday, Dec. 2, on Spike TV. The special two-hour episode will air at 9 p.m. EST, and will feature four fights (the remaining two quarterfinals and a pair of semifinals). The live finale will air on Saturday, Dec. 5, on Spike TV, starting at 9 p.m. EST. The card will feature the two TUF 10 heavyweight finalists, as well as a light-heavyweight bout between Matt Hamill and Jon Jones, and a lightweight match up between Frankie Edgar and Matt Veach. In addition, TUF 10 contestant Kimbo Slice will battle it out against Houston Alexander.
