UFC President Dana White confirmed today that Frankie Edgar will be the next in line for a title fight against lightweight champion B.J. Penn.
There had been speculation that last night's Ultimate Fight Night 20 main event between Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz carried title implications, but after the fighters' performances, White said that he did not feel that Maynard (winner over Diaz) was ready for a title fight.
The man who is eager to step up is Edgar. According to MMAJunkie.com, White green-lit the Penn vs. Edgar fight potentially for UFC 112 on April 10, which will take place in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.. However, White also stated that the fight has not been confirmed.
Previously, Penn had stated in one of his video blogs that he was trying to get onto the UFC 112 card, but nothing was finalized. MMAJunkie.com has recently stated that a source who is close to the UFC has said that the fight is "in the process of being finalized.
Edgar's last fight was against Matt Veach at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on Dec. 5, 2009. He walked away with "Fight of the Night" honors (third time in his career) and a rear naked choke submission victory. Edgar (11-1) is currently on a three-fight winning streak, also defeating Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca.
While Edgar jumped over Maynard for a shot at the 155-lbs. title, Edgar's only professional MMA loss is to Maynard. The two fought at Ultimate Fight Night 13 in April 2008, where Maynard was crowned the victor by unanimous decision.
Penn won the UFC lightweight belt in January 2009, where he defeated Joe Stevenson to earn it. He has since held onto it with with three successful title defenses against Sherk, Kenny Florian and, most recently, a destruction of Diego Sanchez.
