UFC lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, recently defended his title and settled a score with Gray Maynard at UFC 136 but the next move for the lightweight is uncertain according to mmajunkie.com.
"Honestly, I'd like to see Edgar move to 145 and fight Aldo...All these other guys that Edgar fights are so much bigger than him. I think that fighting out of your weight class isn't healthy. I don't think it's healthy long-term," Dana White, UFC president, said.
Edgar has long been considered undersized for the lightweight division but has proven time and time again his ability to win amongst the 155 pound rankings. Edgar holds wins over BJ Penn, Sean Sherk and his recent fourth round knockout win over Maynard only cemented his place as the top dog at lightweight.
"I don't think that guys that fight out of their weightclass and fight a weightclass above them and take damage can have the longevity that other fighters can have. I think when you fight with guys that are your own size, you don't take the punishment that you take when you fight bigger guys" White added.
A main event with the two time defending UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, will surely draw in pay per view buys. Aldo was also on the UFC 136 card, defeating Kenny Florian in a tactical performance en route to a unanimous decision victory and extending his win streak to 12 fights.
"I'm not going to make him do it. Who am I to say, 'Yeah, you can't stay here. You beat everybody in this division'? It's a tough argument to have with him," White said.
Looking ahead, Edgar and his camp will decide in the near future whether or not the drop in weight class will be made. The winner of the Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson at UFC's inaugural event on Fox on November 12 will likely be the next opponent for Edgar if he chooses to stay at lightweight.
