Free agent Roger Huerta excited about MMA again; eying move to Strikeforce
by Jason Benfari on November 25, 2009

"I think two good fights would put me back in the mix for title contention. I think my two losses came to two really good guys and they were both by decision, the last one being a split decision that could have gone either way. Kenny became the number-one contender and Gray could easily become that as well... I recently saw, actually, that fight with Fedor vs. Rogers and the show looked amazing. The fights looked great. There's a lot of great fights in that show... I'd definitely like to fight a top-caliber fighter like (Shinya) Aoki, (Gilbert) Melendez, or (Josh) Thomson. Obviously, I'd have to earn my stripes in that organization, if I went there, but any of those fights would be amazing." -Roger Huerta

MMA restricted free agent Roger Huerta is currently weighing his options and seems to be getting more serious about his MMA career after back-to-back losses to top UFC lightweights Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard. It seems that the losses have lit a fire under the once highly regarded prospect, who now wishes to compete again as soon as February or March of next year.

Huerta (20-3-1) recently declined a UFC overture regarding a five-fight extension to pursue a possible career in acting, and can be seen in "Tekken" and "Circle of Pain," both set for release in 2010. However, playing a fighter on screen apparently hasn't done enough to quell Huerta's desire to compete.

The UFC will have one year to match offers from any other promotion in order to retain Huerta's services and keep him fighting in their lightweight division. Huerta's management have indicated that they are fielding serious interest from "various" other organizations which likely include Strikeforce, Bellator FC, and possibly DREAM.

IwishIwasMMA: IMO this is a double edged sword by the UFC. If Huerta runs over there and destroys EVERYONE, which he has the ability to do, then that may make the average fan believe that Huerta is the best in the world, or that Huerta is not that good because he was getting beat by guys of lesser caliber then the champ in the UFC. thebutterflybee: Lots of cosigning going on you lazy bums. Personally I am a little confused about all the shit that people (not necessarily you guys) are giving Rampage, and even thought Huerta has done pretty much the exact same he is getting no shit? Have I missed some details here? I know he is pretty exciting as a fighter (I loved the way he used the big screen to know where to throw elbows, lol) but for some reason he rubs me up the wrong way, I dont know why. D_V: roger won't run over the strikeforce challengers so it would actually look legit because he'd be fighting guys that will beat him as bad or worse as the last 2 UFC guys that beat him that both get title shots for their efforts. imo, he'd lose to thompson, melendez, aoki, alvarez, etc. he'd make a go of it but still lose. the magic with him would be against hellboy or gomi. pure entertainment value right there.
