GSP vs. Anderson Silva Could Happen at a Catch Weight
by Paulo Silva on August 19, 2008

The big news coming out of the UFC's recent press conference in Chicago for UFC 90 is the possibility of a match up between UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

UFC President Dana White stoked the fire of the potential blockbuster during the press conference stating of that the two could meet at a catch weight.

"(Anderson Silva) could meet Georges St. Pierre at a catch weight," said White. "This guy wants to challenge himself. He'd probably fight at 145 pounds if we asked him to."

This declaration comes on the heals of news out of BJ Penn's camp that Penn will not be facing St. Pierre at the UFC's New Year's Eve event as had previously been rumored. St. Pierre himself admitted recently that he needed to take some time off and would not likely fight again this year.

The UFC finds itself in an interesting predicament with three clearly dominant champions at lightweight, welterweight and middleweight. The space between each champion and the rest of their respective weight classes are so substantial that the organization is now turning to pitting them against one another; and in Silva and Penn's case allowing them to fight outside of their natural weight classes.
