Gabriel Gonzaga returns to the UFC
by Hubert Lau on December 16, 2011

One time UFC heavyweight title contender, Gabriel Gonzaga, is set to return to the UFC at UFC 142 according to mmafighting.com.

Gonzaga (12-6) has signed a four fight deal with the UFC and will be replacing an injured Rob Broughton at UFC 142, set to fight Edinaldo Oliveira. Oliveira is the training partner of current UFC heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos, and sports a 13-0-1 (1 no contest) record with eight of his wins coming from TKO/KO.

Gonzaga is perhaps best remembered for his highlight reel knockout of Mirko Filipovic at UFC 70. Following that fight, "Napão" fought then-heavyweight champion, Randy Couture. Couture would win the bout via KO in the third round.

Gonzaga left the UFC after consecutive losses to Brendan Schaub and dos Santos at UFC 121 and UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones respectively. Following his release, Gonzaga stated that he would only compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but it's clear now that he has a change of heart.

He made his MMA return with his sole bout of 2011, a triangle submission victory over Parker Porter at a Reality Fighting event in early October.
