The previously rumored heavyweight bout between former UFC title contender Gabriel Gonzaga and octagon newcomer Chris Tuchscherer has since been officially added to the preliminary portion of UFC 102.
Tuchscherer is entering the UFC on a three-fight win streak, with his most recent win coming against Jamie Klair at SNMMA: "Extreme Beatdown" in April. The two-time Division II All-American wrestler, Tuchscherer, sports an almost flawless MMA record of 17-1 with his lone loss coming against longtime MMA veteran Travis Wiuff in the finale of YAMMA Pit Fighting's eight-man heavyweight tournament in 2008. 13 of Tuchscherer 17 career victories have been stoppages and he holds notable wins over the likes of UFC veterans Krzysztof Soszynski and Branden Lee Hinkle, as well as WEC veteran Chuck Grigsby.
Gabriel Gonzaga suffered a TKO loss in his last fight against Shane Carwin at UFC 96 in March. Prior to that loss, "Napao" recorded back-to-back wins over Justin McCully at UFC 86 and Josh Hendricks at UFC 91. Gonzaga likes to finish his opponents as none of his 10 career wins have gone to a decision. Four of his wins have come by TKO and six via submission. Gonzaga sports a 6-3 record in 9 fights with the UFC, with notable wins over Carmelo Marrero and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, while losing to top heavyweights Randy Couture, Fabricio Werdum and the aforementioned Carwin.
UFC 102 is set for August 29 at the Rose Center in Portland, Oregon. The event will be the promotions firtst foray into Oregon and will be headlined by a heavyweight battle between past UFC heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Other featured bouts include Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva in a light-heavyweight bout and a crucial middleweight bout between Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt.
