A heavyweight bout between rising contender Junior dos Santos and former UFC heavyweight title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga is in discussions to take place at UFC 107 in December. News of the bout was first reported by Fighters.com.
According to the report, the Gonzaga vs. dos Santos bout is also being considered for the UFC 108 event on Jan. 2 because of the fact that UFC 107 is already stacked with quality pay-per-view fights.
Gonzaga was originally rumored to be facing dos Santos' mentor, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, at an upcoming December or January UFC event, however, it is likely that Nogueira passed on the fight because he did not want to jeopardize losing his promised title shot.
Gonzaga (11-4) is coming off of a first-round TKO win over Brock Lesnar's training partner, Chris Tuchscherer, at UFC 102 in August and is now 3-1 in his last four bouts. His only loss during the stretch came against current UFC heavyweight title challenger Shane Carwin at UFC 96 in March.
Gonzaga has put together a 7-3 record in 10 fights with the UFC, with other notable Octagon wins coming against Kevin Jordan, Justin McCully and Mirko Filipovic. He suffered losses to Fabricio Werdum and Randy Couture. Also worth noting, the Jungle Fight and Shooto veteran has finished all of his 11 career wins.
Dos Santos is currently on a four-fight winning streak, which includes wins in his first three bouts in the UFC over Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve, and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. He has not been defeated since suffering his first career loss against Joaquim Ferreira in Nov. 2007 in Brazil. "Cigano" sports a near perfect MMA record of 9-1,, with all of his wins being by stoppage including six by TKO or KO.
UFC 107 takes place on Dec. 12 from the FedExForum in Memphis, TN. The event will be headlined by a UFC lightweight title bout between current champ B.J. Penn and top contender Diego Sanchez.
In addition, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will take on Cheick Kongo, and Kenny Florian and Clay Guida will face each other in a lightweight bout.
