Former DREAM middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi is one of the first fighters to not sign with the UFC following the demise of Affliction as he recently signed a three-fight deal with Strikeforce, according to The Fight Network.
"I signed a three-fight deal with Strikeforce and I want to box," said Mousasi. "I hope to be part of the Showtime boxing series, too."
The first fight on Mousasi's new deal with Strikeforce is the recently announced August 15 bout with Renato Sobral, which will be for the promotion's light-heavyweight title. The match up was originally scheduled to take place at Affliction "Trilogy" on August 1, however, the promotion has since been canceled the event and folded its MMA operations.
Following his August 15 Strikeforce debut, Mousasi will head back over to Japan to take on Pride and UFC veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in the semifinals of DREAM's "Super Hulk" tournament at DREAM 11 on October 6. The winner of that bout will meet the winner of Hong Man Choi vs. Ikuhisa Minowa in the finals.
Mousasi is currently on an impressive 12-fight win streak, which includes wins over the likes of Hector Lombard, Evangelista Santos, Denis Kang, Melvin Manhoef, Ronaldo Souza and most recently Mark Hunt at DREAM 9 in May. He has put together a 25-2-1 MMA record during his six-year professional career, with 14 wins by TKO or KO and 9 by submission and while fighting for promotions including DREAM, Pride, DEEP, Rings and Bodog Fight.
