Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will join UFC welterweight champion George St-Pierre this week to help St-Pierre prepare for his upcoming title defense against Dan Hardy at UFC 111 on March 27.
Mousasi usually practices in Holland, where his camp is based, and this will mark his first time training in the United States. For Mousasi, this is a great opportunity to train with one of the best in the sport, and he's looking forward to working with St-Pierre. Mousasi will join St-Pierre in Miami to train before attending the Strikeforce event which is airing there on January 30 as a spectator.
"To be honest, I'm curious about everything," Mousasi told Sherdog.com. "I'm curious how he does things and if I have to say something specific that would be how he puts everything together to be able to take down opponents with ease."
Although Mousasi may be helping St-Pierre prepare now, he's not neglecting his own busy schedule for the coming year, and he had some thoughts on an expected April title fight between himself and Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal.
Lawal is a perfect 6-0 in his MMA career, and though he lacks Mousasi's experience, he has a strong collegiate wrestling background and is a dangerous striker. Mousasi is not taking King Mo lightly.
"He's undefeated," Mousasi explained. "He's confident, obviously. He has also proven himself in wrestling, from what I've heard. I think he does his homework. Style-wise he matches up very well for me and I think he feels the same way about my fight style against him. Basically, if he wants to take me down, he has to set the takedown with punches. I don't see that happening. In the clinch, I'm much better with inside boxing, with knees, kicks. I've never seen him kick, so I see a lot of advantages. His only advantage, basically, is the wrestling and he has good ground-and-pound, but I feel I have the same ground-and-pound, so I don't see any advantage that he has over me."
Mousasi, who is 28-2-1 in his career, seized the Strikeforce light-heavyweight title last August with a first round knockout of Renato Sobral, but has yet to defend his belt, as his fight against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou last November was a non-title fight.
