Gegard Mousasi wants to "test himself" against Jon Jones
by Tim Groves on April 07, 2011

“Right now Jon Jones is considered the best, and if I win my fights, maybe it could build up a good match against him. I think it would be such a great fight, so I would like to test myself against him." - Gegard Mousasi

Gegard Mousasi will step into the cage this Saturday against Keith Jardine at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley. While he certainly isn't taking Jardine likely, Mousasi is very interested in testing his skills against Jon Jones in the future, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Mousasi was the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion before Muhammed Lawal out-wrestled him on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Since then, the Armenian has rebounded with two straight victories over Jake O'Brien and Tatsuya Mizuno.

While Mousasi is contemplating trying to make a run as a boxer in the 2012 Olympics, he know he needs to win in mixed martial arts.

“I need to win my fights first in Strikeforce, and then there’s a possibility to fight in the UFC or have the Strikeforce champion versus the UFC champion," Mousasi said. "But I’ve got to win my fights before thinking about that possibility.”

Mousasi vs. Jones a few years down the line, who's interested?

 |  (5) Comments Wandering_Minstrel: Interesting matchup for sure, but if Gegard was taken down at will by Lawal, I think Jones could make him his plaything because Bones has very good striking and it is his ability to mix those strikes with the takedowns (particularly throws) that make him dangerous. I mean... JBJ just made Shogun look silly in his last fight. Who's the last guy that Mousasi did that to? O'Brien? Puh-LEEZ! TGroves: I think in a couple of years, this could be a VERY interesting fight. Mousasi has some really good striking and really dangerous Jiu-Jitsu. I know Lawal took Mousasi down a lot, but Lawal and Jones have COMPLETELY different wrestling. Lawal generally shoots in for single/double leg takedowns, while Jones uses more clinch/trip takedowns. This generally wouldn't see important, but Mousasi is a black belt in Judo as well so he is obviously pretty strong in the clinch. I think Jones would definitely get him down at some point, but I don't think it would be as easy as his past few opponents. The Hitman: After seeing what Jones did Shogun I don't see Mousasi being able to do much more. GO HARD: mousassi would get hurt. Keith Mondaca: I really wish Mousasi would have stayed at middleweight, he was an absolute beast. Too bad he had to keep growing ;P. I'd still love to see this fight happen eventually. I think Mousasi can surprise if he can keep the fight standing, but that's saying a lot.
