A featherweight bout between UFC veterans George Roop and Leonard Garcia is now expected for WEC 47 in March after Garcia's originally announced opponent Diego Nunes was forced to withdraw from the event due to an injury suffered in training. News of the change was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.
Roop (10-6) can't seem to string together a number of wins of late, as he is an even 2-2 in his last four bouts. He most recently lost to bantamweight Eddie Wineland in his WEC debut at last month's WEC 46 event. He has also fought for the other Zuffa-owned promotion, the UFC, going 1-2 with the promotion before being released following a loss against George Sotiropoulos at UFC 101 in August.
Garcia (13-5) is 1-2 in his last three bouts, most recently suffering a unanimous decision loss to Manny Gamburyan at WEC 44 in November. He has put together a 3-2 WEC record since debuting with the promotion last February, scoring wins over Hiroyuki Takaya, Jens Pulver and Jameel Massouh. His only other WEC loss was against former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown.
WEC 47 takes place on March 6 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio and the event's main card will air live on Versus. Headlining the event is a WEC bantamweight title bout between current champion Brian Bowles and challenger Dominick Cruz.
In addition, former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres returns against rising contender Joseph Benavidez in the night's co-main event. Other bouts featured on the main card include Jens Pulver vs. Javier Vazquez, Bart Palaszewski Vs. Karen Darabedyan and Deividas Taurosevicius Vs. LC Davis.
