Georges St. Pierre: "I'm not fighting to be champion anymore. I'm fighting for a legacy."
by Natalia Baage on February 27, 2010

"It's hard to become champion. And it's even harder to stay champion. Right now, I'm the target. Everybody want to take my place. I know what it take to be champion and I don't plan to let go of my title anytime soon. I'm not fighting to be champion anymore. I'm fighting for a legacy. Even if I believe I'm a better fighter than Dan Hardy, the night of the fight, I'm going to have to fight the best fight because if I don't -- it might be a bad night for me. I don't take this fight lightly. He's the most dangerous guy I've fought so far. I'm bigger, stronger, more powerful and more skilled than I've ever been. I see it like a marathon, not like a sprint. There's not one fight that will define me... it's the sum of my fights. I'm a proud champion and I want to fight the best out there. March 27 you will see the best Georges St. Pierre that ever step into the Octagon. I'm going to fight Dan Hardy like nobody has fought him before. It's easy to talk trash but harder to fight. I'm not really good at it. Fighting, it's what I'm good at."  - Georges St. Pierre

He is considered to be the best in the world by many fans, officials and commentators. But on March 27, Georges St. Pierre will be putting his welterweight belt on the line for the sixth time. This time, he'll face the U.K.'s rising talent Dan Hardy.

With St. Pierre's extremely impressive wrestling skills, he might be able to get Hardy to the mat and work in some ground-and-pound to end the fight. However, Hardy has top-level striking that St. Pierre will need to watch out for. UFC President Dana White has made the comment that the only weakness in St. Pierre's game is his stand up. While the Canadian is not a bad striker by any means - he dismantled Jon Fitch on his feet for some time - he is not as good a striker as he is a wrestler.

Working with Firas Zahabi and Greg Jackson, St. Pierre is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and a third degree black belt in Kyokushin - a martial art that emphasizes full contact karate and striking.

But St. Pierre, overall, might be the best fighter in the world. Pound-for-pound, he has proven that he is strong, skilled, confident, and keeps improving his fight game. At the end of 2009, he was awarded the title of "Best Fighter" at the World MMA Awards. His list of conquests include: Fitch, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Thiago Alves, Karo Parisyan, Josh Koscheck, Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn.

With a 19-2 record, St. Pierre's only losses have come at the hands of Hughes (at UFC 50 in October 2004 where Hughes captured the vacant welterweight title) and Serra (at UFC 69 in April 2007 where St. Pierre lost in a very surprising upset).

UFC 111 will take place on March 27 from Newark, N.J. The event will be co-headlined by another championship fight between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin, who will battle it out for the interim heavyweight belt.

 |  (42) Comments Natalia Baage: Thanks, boys. :) thug4less: Great article, Double N but this kinda stuck out at me. "UFC President Dana White has mad the comment..." I think you meant "made the comment..." but I could be wrong. I also like what GSP said about fighting Dan Hardy like no one's fought him before. Hardy is in for the shock of his life. It's all well and good to talk about how you're going to slay the master until you're in the ring with him. As Kenny Florian learned to his great disappointment. Giada Esposito: Nice read Natalia! GSP has a terrific attitude, I always enjoy listening to what the has to say. And as gifted as he is physically, like Mtx said, it's really his mental game that sets him apart. The Hitman: GSP seems focussed and determined...scary thing shawnb: Good article Nat. and.............. WAR GEORGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IwishIwasMMA: ... GSP does drink. He said this before after a major fight that he was going to have a couple drinks because it was his after party and shit. Also.. I think it is a bit unfair that Hardy has to face the best GSP.. why cant he get the one that Alves got so he has a decent chance? Does anyone really want to see a GSP that could clean up both Alves AND Fitch at the same time...? And then for him to fight a lesser opponent............ god this seems like putting the invincibility cheat on in mortal kombat. MAStudent: How can you not like GSP? He learns every technique there is. He is never out of shape. He has a great attitude. He keeps trying harder than anyone to get even better. He is an awesome game planner/ strategist. And best of all, he kicked the living crap out of Hughes twice, and be at him one of those times by "ow, ow,ow, ok,ok,ok, OK!" verbal submission The Hitman: GSP will go down as the best ever when he retires thebutterflybee: I thought phil baroni was "the best evuh!"? IwishIwasMMA: I agree.. Phil Baroni is a beast. I remember that time when he... well i cant say it because he said he would destroy the planet if i did... lets just say anderson silva cried and walked home.. Storm: anyone seen GSPs "before he was a fighter" pic... ridiculous. so nerdy lookin.
