Georges St. Pierre is considered by many to be the world's greatest mixed martial artist. The popular Canadian has not lost so much as a round in over three years - yes you read that correctly - not one round in his past 7 fights against the sports' highest competition. That's 29 straight rounds for those counting, dating back to the second round of his fight against Josh Koscheck at UFC 74 in 2007.
Since then, the 29-year-old crossover star has had his mug splashed regularly all over popular fitness magazines and billboards, and is featured in mainstream commercials pushing products for the likes of Gatorade and Under Armour. He's also been named Rogers Sportsnet's Canadian Athlete of the year for three years running, beating out mainstream names like the NBA's Steve Nash and the NHL's Sydney Crosby.
St. Pierre is indeed the sports biggest most visible star and now he'll meet his greatest challenge when he takes on former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields. Shields is riding quite a streak of his own. The Ceaser Gracie jiu-jitsu product is undefeated in his last 15 fights, a fact not lost on St. Pierre.
"He's got some advantages over me like I've mentioned before, it's all true," St. Pierre told the MMA Fight Corner presented by FiveKnuckles.com. "The guy hasn't lost in 6 years, that's why I really like the challenge. To tell you the truth, a lot of the guys that I've fought before they want to get me involved in an exchange to try to catch me with a wild punch and knock me out. That was the main thing they wanted to do and how they wanted to win the fight."
With only four knockouts to his credit over the course of 31 professional fights, Jake Shields certainly won't be looking for a knockout. But, St. Pierre admits that what Shields does well makes him dangerous, as he widely considered to be among the best, if not the best, submission grappler in the welterweight division.
"Jake Shields is a much different opponent than all the guys I have fought recently," St. Pierre said. "He actually has the skills to beat me, to put me in danger and really beat me. He doesn't count on a one punch K.O. So for me it's a great fight. He's the most dangerous guy that I've fought in my career and I really welcome the challenge. That's why I'm very excited for the fight. I'm very happy that I get to fight a guy, you know, that's on top of the food chain. The other guys I fought before were top of the food chain, but Jake Shields really stands out from the other guys."
According to St. Pierre, Shields stands out so much that if St. Pierre were to leave the division, he believes that Shields would not only eventually become the next welterweight champion, but that Shields could move up to middleweight and rip the belt from Anderson Silva as well.
"I think it would be Jake Shields; I think he would be number one at 170 [if I left the division.]", St. Pierre said. "Also, I'm going to go even further than that, I think Jake Shields could be champion at 185 as well. That's how good of a fighter he is. People don't know how good this guy is. It's the most dangerous fight of my career. People always talk to me about Silva... they look past Jake Shields."
All that said, St. Pierre remains supremely...
