Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson confirmed for Strikeforce: Evolution on Dec. 19
by Jason Benfari on November 22, 2009

Strikeforce is hoping a third times a charm when they pair current interim Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (16-2) opposite current Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson (16-2). This will be the third time the two have been put together for a rematch of their June 2008 battle which saw Thomson walk away with a unanimous decision victory and the title.

FiveKnuckles.com recently confirmed the news with sources close to the fight who state that bout agreements have been distributed and signed by both fighters.

Since winning the title however, Thompson has suffered from a variety of injuries that have plagued his reign. The highly regarded American Kickboxing Academy product has defended his title only once and hasn't fought in over a year, forcing Strikeforce to create an interim title fight between Melendez and Mitsuhiro Ishida, which Melendez dominated to earn his claim on Strikeforce's lightweight title.

Now healthy, Thomson looks to reassurt his dominance in Strikeforce's lightweight division and unify the title now held by both he and Melendez.
