Former WEC lightweight champion Hermes Franca his called it quits on his career.
His last fight took place on Jan. 8, against Eric Wisely at Max Fights DM Ballroom Brawl IV in Iowa. Wisely scored a first-round TKO, which Franca decided would be his last. The news was reported from Franca's manager, Reed Wallace.
"The fans gave me the passion and strength that kept me competing at the championship levels for all these years," Franca said. "Without them, I couldn't have done it. I owe it all to the fans."
Franca, 35, retires from MMA with a 19-9 record - 3-0 with the WEC, and 6-5 with the UFC. His victories include wins over Marcus Aurelio, Spencer Fisher, Nate Diaz and Jamie Varner.
According to MMAWeekly, Franca will resurrect and teach at his gym, East West Combat Club, in Syracuse, N.Y.
