Herschel Walker finally has an opponent for Strikeforce: "Miami," as the former NFL star will make his much-anticipated MMA debut against Greg Nagy. The bout was first reported by ULTMMA.com, and has since been confirmed by MMA Fighting.
According to the report, the Florida State Athletic Commission has approved the match up, and the bout is waiting to be approved by Strikeforce's broadcast partners at Showtime.
The 47-year-old Walker will be making his MMA debut following a successful collegiate football career, as well as an successful professional football career. Walker played college football at the University of Georgia, where he was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1982 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Walker, who was a one-time USFL MVP, rushed for a combined 13,787 yards in the USFL and NFL. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, rushing for 8,225 yards, and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. In addition, he competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics in the two-man bobsled, where he finished seventh.
Walker has been prepping for his MMA debut at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif. He is no stranger to martial arts though, as he is a sixth degree black belt in Taekwon-Do and has also trained in Muay Thai and Kempo Karate.
Nagy enters the bout with a 1-1 MMA record - both of his bouts taking place under the Rage in the Cage banner. He scored a first-round TKO win over Robert Principato in his professional MMA debut back in May and, most recently, lost a unanimous decision to Francisco Navarro in November.
Strikeforce: "Miami" takes place on Jan. 30 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, FL, and is headlined by a fight between Nick Diaz and DREAM welterweight champion Marius Zaromskis for the promotion's vacant welterweight title.
Also, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will put her 145-lbs. title on the line for the first time against Marloes Coenen in the night's co-main event. In addition, DREAM and K-1 veteran Melvin Manhoef will make his Strikeforce debut opposite the former EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler
