There is something about January that has fighters dropping like flies from both UFC cards in the month.
The latest fighter to withdraw from a January UFC card is hard-hitting lightweight Jeremy Stephens. He was forced to withdraw from his preliminary card bout against UFC sophomore Nik Lentz at UFC Fight Night 20 on Jan. 11 in Fairfax, Va.
According to MMAjunkie.com, Stephens withdrew from the bout after suffering an injury in training and the nature of his injury is not yet known.
Stephens (16-5) is fresh off of a first-round TKO win over Justin Buchholz at UFN 19 on September 16. Prior to the win, he lost back-to-back fights in the Octagon against Joe Lauzon and Gleison Tibau.
Stephens currently owns an even UFC record of 4-4, with other Octagon wins coming against Rafael dos Anjos, Cole Miller and Diego Saraiva.
Lentz (17-3-1) is unbeaten in his last nine bouts, most recently defeating Rafaello Oliveira via unanimous decision in his UFC debut in September at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort."
Headlining the Spike TV televised event, UFC Fight Night 20, is a crucial lightweight bout between TUF 5 alum Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz. In addition, undefeated lightweights Efrain Escudero and Evan Dunham will meet in the co-featured bout of the evening.
