With the injuries continuing to mount for UFC 108, it is safe to say that the event is easily becoming the most injury-plagued card in the promotion's history.
Most of UFC 108's injuries have hit the event's main card, but now the injury bug is starting to pick away at UFC 108's preliminary card, as Rory Markham has been forced out of his unaired preliminary card bout against Martin Kampmann. News of Markham's injury and withdrawal from UFC 108 was first reported by Sherdog.com.
According to the report, Markham recently pulled his Achilles' tendon and needs time to rest and recover.
Other fighters who have recently fallen victim to the UFC 108 'curse' include Carlos Condit, Tyson Griffin and Gabriel Gonzaga.
Markham (16-5) has not fought since being knocked out by Dan Hardy at UFC 95 in February. He was originally slated to fight T.J. Grant at TUF 9 Finale in June but was forced off of that card with an injury as well. Prior to the loss at UFC 95 in February, Markham scored a highlight reel knockout victory of his own over Brodie Farber in his UFC debut in July 2008 at UFC Fight Night 14.
Markham has fought for other promotions during his six-year career, such as Xtreme Fighting Organization, Extreme Challenge, Adrenaline MMA, and the now-defunct IFL promotion. He has scored stoppage victories in all of his 16 career wins including 11 by TKO or KO.
Kampmann (15-3) is coming off of a devastating first-round TKO loss at the hands of Paul Daley at UFC 103 last month. Prior to the loss, he had won his first two bouts since dropping to the welterweight division, scoring wins over Alexandre Barros and Carlos Condit.
UFC 108 takes place on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV, and the event's main card will be televised live on pay-per-view.
The event is now headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva after three previous failed main event attempts due to Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira all withdrawing because of illness or injury.
