Interested in a freakshow? Ken Shamrock and James Toney agree to square off
by Tim Groves on June 24, 2011

Ken Shamrock (28-15-2) and James Toney (0-1) have agreed to face off against each other in a mixed martial arts bout, according to BJPenn.com.

The bout is rumored to take place on September 23rd in El Paso, Texas, although neither one is finalized.

Shamrock is one of the men who helped establish mixed martial arts as a legitimate sport back in the early 1990's. He is arguably most famous for his two fights against Royce Gracie. The first one between the two took place during the semi-finals of the first ever UFC event back in 1993. Gracie was able to submit Shamrock in a battle of wrestling vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The two faced off again at UFC 5 in a superfight. The bout would be ruled a draw after 36 minutes of fighting and no definite ending due to the lack of judges.

His rumored opponent, James Toney, made his name in the boxing ring where he has established a 73-6 mark during his career. He made waves by transitioning over to mixed martial arts late last year to take on the legendary Randy Couture at UFC 118. Couture exploited Toney's lack of wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu and submitted the MMA newcomer in the first round.

The promotion for the bout is currently unknown.

 |  (22) Comments SicJits: Shamwow might win one!!!! unless Toney gets injured and Tito replaces him;) Hizoka: Its a show of washed up has been it seems... The Hitman: I can't take this fight seriously. mike5k: Imagine if Toney clips him and knocks him out cold? Or Shamrock could Randy him and end it quick. Either way, I think I'll enjoy the outcome. illegalpoke: S. M. H. Well. I'm watching. Cryptic_Soldier: If toney wins it would be a blow to MMA... Hizoka: Boxing isn't but a shadow of what it was in the 60s 70s and 80s, now 99% of the fighters no-one has herd of... More people born after 1985 know of more boxers of the 70s then they know of todays boxers. IMO Toney is doing nothing but making himself look old out of shape and ignorant going into a MMA bout when he ONLY knows boxing. When you look at combat sports today Boxing is like checkers when MMA is chess. This fight overall is more of a mockery of the both men then it is of the sport of MMA. Shamrock is trying to get a win in this decade, and Tony is pulling a Chael Sonnen and doing what ever he can to keep people from forgetting about him. SicJits: WTF?!? "Though amidst the trash talk between the two, earlier reports that the rules for their bout would be modified a bit have been confirmed. It will be contested at eight rounds of only 3-minutes each, with both fighters only allowed to stay on the ground for 30 seconds before they get stood back up. Rules are adjusted to slightly favor the boxer, and while it probably won't change the outcome of the fight either way, that special rule-set makes this an even bigger freakshow bout than originally expected."
