Jacob "Stitch" Duran Exclusive Part Two: In his own words
by Tommy Kail on January 21, 2010

"Stitch" Duran has traveled the globe alongside some of the most famous fighters and wrapped hands in some of the most obscure gyms. Now in his mid-fifties, he shows no signs of changing his lifestyle any time soon and has quite a sense of humor to back it up.

With over thirty years of experience under his belt, the legendary trainer is greatly concerned with moving the sport successfully into the future. He has taken it upon himself to pass along his knowledge by producing the 2008 instructional video entitled: "Giving the Fighter One More Round."

A cut man revealing his secrets would be similar to a magician doing the same, but that doesn't bother him much at all. Making known the tricks of the trade is the least "Stitch" can do in return for all the sport has given to him.

Now, I personally live my life by the following three rules: I never take a leak outside in Chicago... I never trust a Szechuan man named Joe... and I never, ever pass up a chance to sit down and shoot the breeze with an old time fight guy.

I've recently done the latter of the three in a follow up to the first part of this two part interview. As it turns out, this man's take on the sport is worth its weight in gold, proving a third of my rules to actually be worth something.

FiveKnuckles.com: "Stitch," I'm really digging your look, especially those glasses... I couldn't even imagine what you look like without them.

Stitch Duran: (Laughs) well, I can't see without them Tom. I've seemed to develop some trademark characteristics with the dark glasses, my thick hair, and my moustache. I've always worn glasses and had thick hair, and like all Mexicans, the moustache grew in when I was about nine years old.

FiveKnuckles.com: (Laughs) you got to go with what works these days. It's like a cross between mysterious cut man and distinguished gentleman. Do I see a GQ cover in the making?

Stitch Duran: It's funny you say that because when I was working UFC 108 earlier this month at the MGM, one of the bodyguards for Lorenzo Fertitta came up to me and said: "I just saw a picture of (legendary guitarist) Carlos Santana; you sure look a lot him... has anybody ever told you that?" I actually get that all the time and that comes from the moustache and the hair.

FiveKnuckles.com: Well, I don't think I've ever seen "Stitch" Duran and Carlos Santana in the same place at the same time. If you're hiding something, you definitely have me fooled.

Stitch Duran: (Laughs) another funny story... we were coming back from an event some time ago and we were in the airport going from the tram to the baggage claim when the guys I was with started messing with the people on the tram by calling me Carlos (in reference to Carlos Santana). The people would look closer and closer, and they started to believe it was true. It ends up I didn't have the heart to tell this little 15 year old girl from El Salvador that I wasn't him. She got so excited and ended up taking a picture with me, but I felt bad afterward because I never had a chance to tell her I was kidding. She got to go home and tell her family she...
