A lightweight battle between Jacob Volkmann and undefeated Paul Sass is tapped for UFC 146.
Volkmann (14-2) kicked off his UFC career with an underwhelming 0-2 start. Losses to Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago were poised to end Volkmann's UFC run before it barely began. Luckily for "Christmas" he found his grove after making a drop from welterweight to the lightweight division. Volkmann has since won five fights in a row all from decisions, last defeating Efrain Escudero via unanimous decision at UFC 141.
Volkmann has also made headlines as being one of the more outspoken critics of President Obama. His last comments made at UFC 141 landed Volkmann in hot water with White Bear Lake High School, where he taught wrestling, and was placed on administrative leave.
Sass (12-0) will be making his third UFC appearance when he fights at UFC 146. The Liverpool native trains out of Team Kaobon, also the home to UFC fighters Terry Etim, Paul Kelly, Paul Taylor and Mark Scanlon. Sass last fought TUF veteran, Michael Johnson, at UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson and won via heel hook submission in the first round.
Matchup wise, Volkmann will likely need to work on his submission defense since his foe sports 11 submission wins in his 12 fights. It is also interesting to note that only one of Sass's submission wins have come in the second round, all others being finished in the first stanza.
Volkmann vs. Sass is set for UFC 146 on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is expected to be headlined by Junior dos Santos defending his heavyweight belt against Alistair Overeem.
