UFC sophomore Jacob Volkmann has agreed to step in for the injured Rory Markham and face Xtreme Couture's Martin Kampmann at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
As reported here over the weekend, Markham was forced out of his preliminary card bout against Kampmann after he pulled his achilles' tendon in training.
Volkmann (9-1), who is a is a three-time All-American wrestler from the University of Minnesota, most recently suffered his first career loss in his UFC debut against Paulo Thiago at UFC 106 last month. Prior to the loss, he had won the first nine bouts of his two-year career, scoring previous notable wins over the likes of Nathan Oliver, Travis McCullough, Bobby Voelker and Kevin Knabjian.
Volkmann has finished six of his nine career wins by submission. He currently hones his skills at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, which is home to notable fighters such as Brock Larson, Sean Sherk, Nik Lentz, Nick Thompson and Brock Lesnar.
In his last fight, Kampmann (15-3) suffered a first-round TKO loss against Paul Daley at UFC 103 in September. He previously won his first two bouts since dropping to the welterweight division, scoring previous wins over Alexandre Barros and Carlos Condit.
Kampmann is 6-2 in eight appearances with the UFC with other notable Octagon wins coming over Thales Leites, Drew McFedries and Jorge Rivera. The King of the Cage and Cage Warriors Fighting Championships veteran has finished 13 of his 15 career wins and holds other wins in his six-year career over Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Brendan Seguin and Edwin Aguilar.
Headlining UFC 108 is a light-heavyweight bout between former UFC light-heavyweight titleholder Rashad Evans and 14-1 American Top Team fighter Thiago Silva.
