Jake Shields wants Strikeforce champions Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez in the UFC
by Natalia Baage on July 08, 2010

Even though he is yet to sign with the UFC, the recently released former Strikeforce champion Jake Shields is looking to bring some of his teammates into the Octagon with him.

Who does he think is ready for the biggest MMA stage? In a recent interview with BJPenn.com, Shields said that Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez should make the transition.

"I would love to see Gilbert and Nick in the UFC," Shields told BJPenn.com. "Even though Strikeforce is a good show, everyone knows it's the number two show. They have a handful of good fighters, but all the top competition is in the UFC, and I feel that Nick and Gilbert are good enough to fight at the highest level. I would love to see them come over and once I get signed I'll have to put that in Dana's ear."

Diaz and Shields are currently the cream of the crop in Strikeforce, as they are, respectively, the welterweight and lightweight title holders.

"I think they are two of the best of the best," Shields said. "I know the UFC likes having the best of the best and it just makes sense for them to be there."

But UFC President Dana White was not a fan of the post-Strikeforce: Nashville brawl, where members of the Gracie camp engaged in a fight with Jason Miller, and does not want that type of behavior in his organization. Therefore, White might be skeptical about bringing the two Strikeforce fighters into the Octagon. However, Shields said that whatever problems have risen in the past between the fighters, specifically Diaz, and the UFC, can be worked out.

In light of all this, with Shields' recent release from Strikeforce, he is currently not attached to any organization, although the possible connection between him and the UFC has been palpable for months. Even though he did not end his contract with Strikeforce on good terms, he still respects the organization, calling them "great," while still saying that "they are clearly the number two organization."

"I think I'm in my prime and I've had a great first part of my career, and I feel it's time to go to the big show," said Shields. "They (Strikeforce) don't seem really interested in building top young fighters in their prime. They had a great batch of young fighters like me, Nick, Gil and King Mo, but they weren't interested in great young fighters. And instead, all the push went to 'has beens' like Shamrock and Cung Le."

 |  (54) Comments D_V: I love the dig at Shamrock. Of course he wants his camp mates in the UFC though. That pretty well goes without saying. He better hope Gilbert doesn't get beat by Eddie Alvarez though because apparently Dana isn't interested in guys coming off of a loss (see, his recent Fedor comments) Also, calling Fedor a top 10 heavy weight but not top 5. Ya, cuz Mir's ahead of him. pffffft. momentous: it really seems childish how Dana approaches the Strikeforce fighters doesn't it? i mean everybody gets a loss here and there. or atleast has a bad showing once in a while. IwishIwasMMA: Fedor would only have to win one or two at most to get a title shot. Dana knows what is up. Melendez would not go anywheres in the UFC though... Alvarez will rape him. HARD. Alvarez needs to go to the UFC. If Alvarez does lose (I cannot see this happening) I will be shocked, but still a massive fan of his. StompGrind: All of them would be good additions to the UFC but I would love to see Nick Diaz fight GSP more than anything else. seal_team_six: I would like to see GSP vs Shields. Shields' standup is horrible, we would get to see gsp strike in that fight, plus shields wouldn't be able to take him down. St. Pierre vs Nick Diaz would be brutal to watch.... brutal, but I would enjoy it. throwingshoes: ok. i don't hate shields anymore. that is all. MusicIzMySavior: gsp smashes shields MusicIzMySavior: i dont think jake shields has anything to offer in the middle weight division GO HARD: Nick Diaz is much improved since his last fight inthe UFC. and even in his decision losses against top guys at the time.. hes always stayed active and put on great fights. thats the DIAZ way!! Nick vs GSP would be a great fight,... the trash talk would be priceless im sure. q; D throwingshoes: GSP finishing someone off? those were the days my friend. talk all the smack you want... its fine. but you honestly think nick vs any of those would not be a great fight - well then, you just plain dumb, sucka! Castle: I like his idea. Get those three in the UFC and shake things up a little....or a lot. Anthony: I'd say Jake is going to have to settle for a split of that doubleheader: He'll get his wish with Gilbert Melendez, but not with Nick Diaz. GO HARD: anytime u have a diaz on their back... u are in danger of losing.. no matter if your fitch or gsp. he could very well fustrate thiago .... we wont know until we see. GO HARD: war diaz throwingshoes: fair enough. war diaz. GO HARD: i like the way i end my debates.... "no andy would kill shogun... i know he would.. im psychic." q; ) imma use that. Wandering_Minstrel: You bury a hatchet, and what's left? A hatchet wound. :D But seriously folks, I have to agree with Mike here. You both have good points, its just that your nut-huggery or lack-thereof prevents you from accepting the other's points. Just let it go because you quite obviously aren't changing each other's minds. throwingshoes: man i used to love me some gsp... my 1st mma purchase was a "Team Rush Xtreme" hoodie.... back when the crow was a feared man. right before franklin vs crow i believe. anyway- good ol george realized he was good at wrestling... and it all kinda went downhill for me. and bj cryin about their fight also pushed my interest away. by now gsp was unstoppable, and alves was rising in the ranks. theere was so much gsp fapping goin on, i had to back alves. plus alves is a striker... like gsp used to be. but- we know how that ended. i wrestled for about 6 yrs. its best base you can have for MMA. and- its usually free when you wrestle in school. i love seeing wrestlers evolve- edgar, kos, hell even sherk is throwin them lil t-rex arms around now. but to have a top fighter shift into a heavy wrestling discipline is a bummer. you kicked all kinds of azz ont he way up- and now you're there and gonna sprawl and stall? not sayin he does that literally, but i dont want to see a wrestling match when i comes to gsp. or nipple twisting. mike5k: I don't find GSP's recent fights to be the most exciting but he's pretty far from being boring too. He beat the hell out of Penn and Alves and he went for a few submissions on Hardy. I know that you guys aren't exactly "hating" but someone's bound to come in and start a "GSP for president" war just from what you did say. :) IwishIwasMMA: ... Well GSP did beat the living fucking shit out of Fitch and Alves. And he did try to submit Hardy for 5 rounds.. and BJs face did like like hamburger helper. GSP did stand with Alves in their fight, and Alves hit the canvas a couple times. One was clearly a knock down, and I think the others were slips. GSP beat Alves up on the feet, on the ground, and injured himself before he did it all over again within a single fight. Honestly, I cannot ask for more from a fighter. Just try to finish your opponent and I am happy.
