James Irvin returns to the light-heavyweight division; to face Igor Pokrajac at UFC on Versus 2
by Jacob Camargo on May 07, 2010

Nine-fight Octagon veteran James Irvin will no longer be making the tough and strenuous cut down to 185 pounds, as his experimental move to the UFC's middleweight division appears to be done after only one fight.

Irvin will move back up to the light-heavyweight division to face Igor Pokrajac at UFC on Versus 2 in August. News of the bout was first reported by MMAWeekly.com.

Irvin (14-6) is currently on a two-fight losing streak, most recently losing in his middleweight debut to Alessio Sakara at UFC on Versus 1 on March 21. The weight cut clearly took a toll on Irvin and he looked a shell of the hard-hitting fighter he was at the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions.

The loss marked Irvin's first fight since losing to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a featured light-heavyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 14 in July 2008. A nine month suspension for testing positive for banned painkillers, Methadone and Oxymorphone, as well as couple of knee injuries kept him on the sidelines for nearly two years.

Irvin has put together a sub-par 4-5 record with the UFC, scoring Octagon wins over Terry Martin, Hector RamirezLuiz Cane and Houston Alexander.

Pokrajac (21-7) will likely be fighting for his job in the UFC, as he has lost his first two bouts with the promotion against Vladimir Matyushenko and most recently James Te Huna at UFC 110 in February. Prior to the losses, he put together an eight fight winning streak to gain a contract with the UFC, earning stoppages in seven of those wins.

The seven-year veteran has finished 18 of his 21 career wins, but hasn't fared too well against top competition in his career, suffering losses to UFC veteran Assuerio Silva and former EliteXC fighter Mamed Khalidov

Though not officially announced, UFC on Versus 2 is expected to take place on August 1 at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it will be the promotion's first ever event in the state.
