James Irvin will now fight Wilson Gouveia in place of Chael Sonnen. The middleweight bout is set to take place on August 29 in Portland, Oregon at UFC 102.
Gouveia's original UFC 102 opponent, Chael Sonnen, was pulled from the bout due to a fill-in for the injured Yushin Okami. Sonnen will now fight Dan Miller at UFC 98.
Gouveia is coming off a TKO loss against Nate Marquardt at UFC 95. Prior to this loss, Gouveia won two straight fights in the UFC over Ryan Jensen and Jason MacDonald.
Irvin was originally set to fight Drew Mcfedries at UFC 98 but a torn meniscus knocked him off the card. Irvin is not expected to undergo surgery but will have to rehab it for approximately five weeks.
"The Sandman" will look to rebound after losing to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. After the loss, Irvin tested positive for Methadone and Oxymorphone in a post fight drug test and he was subsequently suspended by the NSAC for 9 months.
UFC 102 expects to feature a main event bout with Randy “The Natural” Couture fighting Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. A light-heavyweight bout between Keith Jardine and Thiago Silva is expected to be included on the card.
