At the end of Saturday night's WEC 43 interim title fight, Jamie Varner stepped into the cage and spoke with Ben Henderson about their title unification bout.
After Henderson had won his fight against Donald Cerrone on Saturday night, WEC general manager Reed Harris yelled to Henderson's corner for their fighter to call on Varner for a December unification bout.
However, Henderson's manager, Jason Genet, recently ruled out any plans for a December bout.
"Ben won't be ready for a December fight," Genet told FanHouse.com, "and we are hoping for January or February."
The extra month or two will allow Henderson a period of time off, followed by a good stint of training for his fight against Varner.
Both fighters wanted to battle in Arizona - Varner's home state and Henderson's state of training. The fight is currently scheduled to take place in Phoenix.
Varner, the current WEC lightweight champion, holds a 16-2 MMA record. He won the belt in Feb. 2008. His last fight took place in Jan. 2009, where he defeated Cerrone.
Henderson, who just became the WEC's interim lightweight champion after defeating Cerrone on Saturday via unanimous decision, holds a 10-1 MMA record.
