Strikeforce's interim middleweight title bout appears to be set as Dream and UFC veteran Jason "Mayhem" Miller will take on former EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields. A location and date for the event is yet unknown, but it is likely to take place in November when prized free agent signee Fedor Emelianenko makes his Strikeforce debut.
News of the bout was came from Miller himself on a forum post at MyFightTeam.com and was confirmed with sources close to both fighters.
"I'm set to take on Jake Shields for the middleweight championship of the world in Strikeforce," Miller wrote.
Strikeforce decided to create an interim middleweight belt as the promotions middleweight champion Cung Le has been on hiatus from the sport for more than a year making movies. Le expects to be back at the end of the year or in the beginning of 2010 to face the winner of Shields vs. Miller.
Miller was originally expected to face Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, who recently signed with Strikeforce, at DREAM 11 on October 6 for the promotion's vacant middleweight title, but that fight has apparently been scrapped.
Miller (22-6) has won five of his last six bouts and he fought to a no contest against Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at DREAM 9 in May. Prior to DREAM 9, he defeated Kala Hose at Kingdom MMA: "Miller vs. Hose." During his 8 year career, Miller has fought for the UFC, WEC, Icon Sport, SuperBrawl, Extreme Challenge and HDNet Fights. 17 of his 22 career wins have been via stoppages and he holds notable wins over the likes of Toby Imada, Denis Kang, Robbie Lawler and Tim Kennedy.
Shields (23-4-1) is currently riding an impressive 10 fight win streak, which include wins over Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, Nick Thompson, Paul Daley and most recently Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce's June 6 event in a 182-pound catchweight bout. He is a 10-year veteran of the sport, fighting for Pancrese, Shooto, Rumble on the Rock, Bodog Fight and EliteXC. The Cesar Gracie jiu-jitsu fighter holds other notable wins over the likes of Hayato Sakurai, Mike Pyle, Toby Imada and Dave Menne.
