Jay Hieron could step in to face Nick Diaz at Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg"
by Jacob Camargo on July 28, 2009

Following the cancellation of his bout at Affliction: "Trilogy," former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron is in talks to face Nick Diaz at Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" in a bout that could be for the promotion's vacant welterweight belt according to Diaz's management who confirmed the information with FiveKnuckles.com.

"That's what we're hearing right now, but nothing's been signed at this point," said a source close to the camp. "The bottom line is that Nick's waiting for an opponent and he doesn't care who it is."

Diaz was originally slated to rematch Joe Riggs for the newly created Strikeforce welterweight strap, however, Riggs pulled out of the bout due to a bad reaction to prescription medication which resulted in a extended hospital stay.

Hieron was all set to take on Paul Daley at Affliction: "Trilogy" until Affliction was forced to canceled its third event and ultimately fold its MMA promotion aspirations.

A source close to his camp informed FiveKnuckles.com that while talk of a Hieron-Diaz matchup was ongoing, it was still up in the air at this point.

The bout was first rumored for the Strikeforce event back on June 6 , however, the promotion opted to book Diaz against hard-hitting middleweight Scott Smith.

Hieron (17-4) is currently in the midst of a five-fight win streak, with his most recent win coming against Jason High on the Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" back in January. Prior to joining Affliction, he went 8-2 outside the promotion, which includes a 7-2 record with the now-defunct IFL organization. Hieron holds notable wins over Donnie Liles, Pat Healy and Jake Ellenberger.

Diaz has also won five straight bouts, all via stoppage, which include wins in his first two Strikeforce bouts against MMA legend Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith respectively. Prior to his current stint with Strikeforce, he went 4-1 with Elite XC, with his only loss coming against KJ Noons. The Cesar Gracie product holds an overall MMA record of 20-7, with 17 of his wins coming via stoppage and holding notable career wins over Chris Lytle, Josh Neer and Robbie Lawler.

Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg" will take place on August 15 in San Jose, California and will feature a 145-pound women's title bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos as well as a two other title fights.
