Jeremy Stephens hopes to fight Takanori Gomi in his next bout according to mmajunkie.com.
Stephens is fresh off of a dominant unanimous decision performance over Danny Downes in The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. Looking ahead Stephens desires a fight with one of the UFC's lightweight contenders and now has his sights set on the former Pride lightweight champion.
"To me, that's an exciting fight. I have a lot of respect for the guy. He's very tough, and I'll have to train my ass off to be on point that night and be the better man. There's also the chance I could lose. The guy's a tremendous fighter, but I think I'd knock his ass out, and I think I'm a lot better than him. Actually, I know I'm a lot better than him, so why not give the fans what they really want, and that's to see exciting fights?" Stephens said on mmajunkie.com.
Stephens also added that stylistically, the fight would match up well for him. Both Stephens and Gomi have shown their willingness to stand and trade punches. Additionally Stephens has been on the rise as of late, going 4-1 in his last five fights and 7-5 overall in the UFC. Gomi on the other hand, has been struggling since his arrival to the UFC with a 1-2 record and going 3-4 in his last seven fights. His last bout saw the Japanese import lose via guillotine choke to Clay Guida.
Currently there is no indication whether or not Stephens will get his wish.
