Middleweight prospect Jesse Forbes has signed a new contract with the UFC and will step in for his injured Arizona Combat Sports teammate Steve Steinbeiss against Nick Catone. The fight will take place on the un-aired preliminary protion of UFC Fight Night 20 in January, according to a report MMAjunkie.com.
The nature of Steinbeiss' injury is not known and there no timetable for his return as of yet.
According to the report, Forbes signed with Shine Fights last month, however, in a classy move, the organization let him out of his contract when Forbes expressed his interest in the UFC deal.
Forbes (12-3) was a cast member on the third season of the Ultimate Fighter reality series, going 0-2 throughout the season, losing to Noah Inhofer and Josh Haynes. In his lone bout with the UFC, he was defeated by fellow TUF 3 alum Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter 3 finale in June 2006 and was released from the promotion shortly thereafter.
Forbes has been very successful during his time away from the UFC, going 11-2 in his last 13 bouts. He is currently on a five fight winning streak, with four of the wins coming by first round stoppage. Forbes most recently scored a unanimous decision win over James Head in August. He has competed for an array of notable promotion during his four-year career, including Rage in the Cage, WEC, Worldwide Fighting Championship and Maximum Fighting Championships.
Catone (6-2) opened his UFC career with promise by scoring a impressive second round submission win over Derek Downey in his debut with the promotion at UFC Fight Night 17 in February. However, he has now fighting to stay in the UFC, as he has lost back-to-back fights against Tim Credeur and most recently Mark Munoz at UFC 102 in August.
Prior to joining the UFC, Catone had won the first five bouts of his career. The longtime Ring of Combat veteran has finished all but one of his six career wins.
The fast approaching UFC Fight Night 20 event takes place on Jan. 11 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia and the main card will be televised live on Spike TV. Headlining the event is a crucial lightweight tilt between TUF 5 rivals Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz.
