Joachim Hansen to challenge DREAM featherweight champion Bibiano Fernandes at DREAM 13
by Jacob Camargo on January 26, 2010

The first-ever DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen is going to try his luck at a lighter weight, as he is expected to make the drop down to featherweight and face current DREAM featherweight champion Bibiano Fernandes at DREAM 13.

FiveOuncesofPain.com first reported the possibility of the bout yesterday and MMAjunkie.com has since confirmed that both fighters have verbally agreed to the fight.

Hansen (19-8-1) will drop down to featherweight after he lost his DREAM lightweight title in his last bout. He suffered a second-round submission loss to Shinya Aoki in their rubber match at DREAM 11 in October. It was the first fight in 15 months for Hansen after he was forced to withdraw from two previous title defenses due to injuries. He previously defeated Aoki at DREAM 5 in July 2008 to capture the promotion's lightweight title.

Aside from DREAM, Hansen has fought with other promotions during his 10-year career, such as K-1 Hero's, Pride and Shooto, where he held the promotion's welterweight title. He has scored stoppages in 12 of his 19 career wins, and holds other professional wins over Rumina Sato, Luiz Azeredo, Takanori Gomi, Gesias Cavalcante Caol Uno, Masakazu Imanari and Yves Edwards.

Fernandes (7-2) is currently on a six-fight winning streak, which includes an amazing 4-0 run through Dream's 16-man featherweight grand prix, defeating Takafumi Otsuka, Masakazu Imanari, Joe Warren before finishing with a win over Hiroyuki Takaya in the finals to capture the promotion's first-ever featherweight title at DREAM 11 on Oct. 6.

Fernandes, who is a decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and world jiu-jitsu championship competitor, has been competing professionally for over five years, while fighting for other notable promotions such as K-1 Hero's, Jungle Fight and Raw Combat. His only two career losses came against Urijah Faber and Norifumi Yamamoto.

There is no official date or location for DREAM 13, however, the promotion will reportedly announce the event before the week's end.
