Joe Riggs vs. Nick Diaz II officially called off
by Jacob Camargo on July 24, 2009

Another title fight bites the dust for August 15's Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg". In a card that once has four title bouts, that number has dwindled to just two with the announcement that Joe Riggs has been forced out from his rematch with Nick Diaz in a bout that was to determine the promotion's newly created welterweight title champion. News of Riggs' departure from the card comes via GracieFighter.com.

The report states that Riggs was suffering from a "a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug," which will cause him an extended hospital stay, possibly weeks. Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz has confirmed the news with Fiveknuckles.com but has yet to get word from Riggs Himself.

Afromowitz also stated that Diaz will remain on the card and a search for a replacement is currently underway. But, it is unknown at this time whether the fight will be for Strikeoforce's welterweight title.

Joe Riggs and Nick Diaz were looking to settle a score from their previous bout in which Riggs defeated Diaz three years ago at UFC 57 in February 2006. Both men brawled again after the fight during their hospital stay, in which Diaz is believed to have gotten the better of the two.

The first title bout to be scratched from Strikeforce's August 15th fight card was a heavyweight title bout between champion Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum. Overeem was originally scheduled to defend his belt on June 6, however, he was forced out of that event due to a hand injury he suffered in a nightclub brawl. A replacement is also currently being sought for Werdum.

Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg"will air live on Showtime and take place on the promotion's original stomping grounds of San Jose, California. The event will be headlined by a fight between Gina Carano and Cris "Cyborg" Santos for Strikeforce's first-ever 145-pound women's title. Also, Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson will defend his belt against the man he defeated last year to capture the belt, Gilbert Melendez.
