"We gotta see what happens with Cain Velasquez. Cain Velasquez is a motherfucker! That guy is frighteningly talented and frighteningly dedicated. Incredible technique, too, everything he does. His punches, his take downs, his kicks. Everything is perfect technique. There's no fluff in his technique, there's no fat. There's no excess movement. The way he throws leg kicks - God damn beautiful. Just perfect technique. When he throws punches - same thing. Everything is perfect technique. His endurance is second to none. I'm super, super impressed with Cain Velasquez. I think he's just amazing." - Joe Rogan (via video blog)
With eight fights under his belt, Cain Velasquez (8-0) has done nothing but impress. Only one of his fights has gone the distance; the rest have ended via (T)KO.
Velasquez's wrestling and kickboxing have garnered him much attention. Fans are calling for him to get the next title shot against the winner of Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, who will fight at UFC 116 on July 3. However, there is a stronger likelihood that Velasquez will face the equally impressive Junior dos Santos, with the winner to get the next title shot.
The American Kickboxing Academy product has earned two Knockout of the Night honors since he began fighting with the UFC in April 2008, one of which was in his most recent fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 110. Many fans were town between the two fighters, who spent half of the first round feeling each other out on their feet. Velasquez landed short combinations and crisp leg kicks while Nogueira countered with his own strikes. But Velasquez saw an opportunity, unleashed a nasty left-right-left combination that dropped Nogueira to the mat. Velasquez then proceeded to follow him down and don some ground-and-pound before Herb Dean stopped the fight. Velasquez walked away with a first-round KO.
Velasquez's dream to become the heavyweight champion is quickly becoming a tangible reality. His potential fight against dos Santos moves him one step closer - with one step left to go - from the championship belt.
