"This is easily my biggest fight and my biggest test. Diego’s come along leaps and bounds with his stand-up, and I still think his hustle and his Jiu-Jitsu are his strongest suits. He’s going to come and try to go frantic on me early, and he’ll probably try and take me down. But I just see myself beating him up standing then eventually getting my takedown and staying on top and trying to pound him out. I’ve watched most of Diego’s fights anyway because he’s always on the main card of the UFC shows. I watch most of them when they’re live, but I’ve gone back and studied quite a few of his tapes. There’s no pain in watching, so it’s not bad."-John Hathaway
Rising undefeated welterweight prospect John Hathaway talks about his upcoming fight against TUF 1 winner Diego Sanchez. The bout will take place on the main card of UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas.
Hathaway is a flawless 3-0 inside the Octagon, last competing at UFC 105 in November, where he defeated Paul Taylor by unanimous decision. His other Octagon wins came over Tom Egan at UFC 93 and Rick Story at UFC 99.
Hathaway has the task of welcoming Sanchez back to the welterweight division after "The Nightmare" went 2-1 during his time in the lightweight division. Sanchez notched back-to-back wins over Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida to earn a shot at then-UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn. But Penn dominated their fight, earning a fifth-round TKO win over Sanchez at UFC 107 in December.
England's Hathaway will be looking to keep his perfect 12-0 MMA record intact when he faces Sanchez, who is, without a doubt, considered to be Hathaway's toughest opponent over his four-year professional MMA career.
Hathaway is known for a combination of his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills and brutal ground-and-pound, however, many feel Sanchez is a more well-rounded fighter with the better offensive skills and grappling.
Having finished eight of his 12 career wins, Hathaway may have a tougher time trying to put Sanchez away, as Sanchez has only been finished one time in three career losses throughout his eight-year career.
Will Hathaway score the biggest win of his career? Or will Sanchez be too much for the 22-year-old hot prospect in his return to the welterweight division? All questions will be answered come Saturday night.
