Jon Fitch: "If I can stop Thiago Alves, I did something twice GSP couldn't do."
by Giada Esposito on March 19, 2010

"I've made a lot of changes. You might not have seen all of them yet. You're going to see them in this fight. Thiago's made a lot of changes, but it's still not enough to beat me. I've got way more tricks up my sleeve about people trying to take me down, than he's been able to develop stopping people from that sort of thing. A win over Thiago puts me right back in line for a title shot. Especially if I can stop him. If I can stop Thiago Alves, I did something twice GSP couldn't do in five rounds. I know that smashing Thiago can put me closer to that title shot, but I'm not worried about that fight right now. I got to worry about Thiago. Everything is based on putting Thiago away." -Jon Fitch

Jon Fitch will be looking to do something when he faces Thiago Alves at UFC 111 that he hasn't done since 2007- finish an opponent.

Although Fitch is widely considered to be one of the top welterweight fighters in the world, he has struggled lately with his ability to put opponents away, even in fights he has controlled. Most recently, Fitch defeated Mike Pierce at UFC 107, but despite having Pierce in trouble at several points in the fight, Fitch was unable to capitalize, and ended up taking home a unanimous decision.

With a big win over Thiago Alves, Fitch likely moves to the head of the line for the next welterweight title shot. Fitch has already fought for the welterweight title once in his career, a five round battle against champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87.

The fight earned Fitch "Fight of the Night" honors, but ended in his first and only UFC loss to date. Coming into the contest, Fitch had put together a then UFC record eight-fight win streak, with notable victories over Alves and Diego Sanchez along the way.

Since the loss, Fitch has bounced back with three straight wins, including a victory over talented newcomer Paulo Thiago, to set up his possible title eliminator with Alves.

The first time the two fought was at Ultimate Fight Night 5 back in 2006, where Fitch was able to stop Alves with an unusual upkick TKO in the second round. Following that fight, Alves tore through the welterweight division with seven straight wins, including consecutive victories over Chris Lytle, Karo Parisyan, Matt Hughes, and Josh Koscheck en route to a title shot against St. Pierre at UFC 100. But, like so many others before him, Alves fell victim to St. Pierre's high level, well-rounded game, eventually dropping a unanimous decision loss after five painful rounds.

 |  (32) Comments Kable: Alves by TKO. I don't like how Fitch is becoming...he is turning in Kos and i hate Kos. Mtx: Fitch by UD. I still don't believe this new talk. I think it will go like all of Fitch fights, just TD after TD and some good wrestling. Castle: Fitch has GSP on the brain and can't shake it. Can't blame him though. This should be a very good fight and both fighters could get the win. I'm more of an Alves fan and I hope he wins in impressive (devastating) fashion...but I would not be one bit surprised it Fitch gets the UD. Patrick Sullivan: That's a big ole "if." Fitch couldn't stop Mike Pierce in his last fight, and I don't think he's going to stop Alves. I'm not much of a fan of Fitch. I respect him for even getting off his stool for rounds 4 and 5 against GSP, but his recent fights have helped cure my insomnia. And I know it's not fair, but I think I hold the AKA guys not fighting each other against them more than, say, A. Silva and Machida, or Dos Santos and Big Nog. Wandering_Minstrel: I... am a Fitch fan. There, I said it. I don't like that he's being mouthy, but if it worked for Sonnen it will work for Fitch. I think Fitch just has a little more than Alves, and I believe thats what will win him this fight. I think he fared better than Alves did against GSP (although thats not saying much). I definitely believe that Fitch has a bigger gas tank which could be very crucial for him in this fight. Mickey knox: I'm hoping to see Alves get a TKO in the first round. Fitch is a great fighter, but Alves has improved so much since they last fought that it's hard for me to not root for him. I say TKO in the first, because if it gets very far into the second, it will probably be Fitch's fight. Little_Kang: Great.... who could do something GSP couldn't....... someone should remind Fitch of how his face felt after he fought GSP Storm: some of my fav events... UFC 87 and 90 kicked ass. Anthony: By the same "logic," didn't David Heath do something Rashad couldn't do; that is to say, go the distance with Lyoto Machida? The Hitman: what has gotten into fitch lately? he thinks he is the shit and keeps comparing himself to GSP. i still havent decided who i am picking in this fight GO HARD: i thought the Karo stoppage was the correct call... i know Karo didnt, but thats Karo for ya. q; ) arlovskiviako: That Karo stoppage was good, dude folded in fucking half. Little_Kang: no ref is worse then dan mirgolitta
