Jon Fitch not interested in Rick Story; wants to fight BJ Penn or GSP instead
by Hubert Lau on June 01, 2011

Jon Fitch is not interested in a fight with the surging Rick Story, instead desiring to rematch BJ Penn or George St. Pierre instead according to mmaweekly.com.

Story has been on a tear, going on a six fight winning streak including a unanimous decision victory over highly touted Thiago Alves at UFC 130. Story believes he is ready to fight with the best and called out Fitch as his next opponent. However for the longtime welterweight contender, Fitch is not interested one bit.

"I'm at a point in my career where I need to be fighting main events and main event fighters. And if you don't have a belt, currently, or you haven't owned a belt in the UFC, I'm not really interested," Fitch said on mmaweekly.com.

Fitch feels that if he fought fighters with lower recognition than himself, he wouldn't be able to maximize his own potential in the UFC.

"When you fight somebody who no one knows and don't recognize their name, it doesn't matter how bad you beat them...I want BJ or GSP, those are the only two guys I care (to fight) or have any interest in right now. If I (have to) sit out a year and wait for them, I'll do it" Fitch added on mmaweekly.com.

Fitch currently holds a 23-3-1 and one no contest on his record and his only lost in 9 years was to the current UFC welterweight champion, St. Pierre. He is also recovering from a shoulder injury that forced him off of a rematch with Penn originally scheduled for UFC 132. Fitch's recovery is going ahead of schedule and expects to be back in the octagon around November, December at the latest.

Story is an exciting fighter. 2. Fitch needs an exciting fighter, Jon's fights are starting to put people to sleep with boredom. Giada Esposito: Honestly, I can see how Fitch feels this way, but I still think Story is potentially a good next fight for him. He had to withdraw from his fight with BJ due to an injury (btw, does anybody know what it was or when he will be back?), and it looks like GSP will most likely face Diaz next. That leaves a big gaping hole in Fitch's schedule. There are certainly a lot of possibilities at WW to fill that hole- Shields, winner of Condit vs. Kim, winner of Sanchez vs. Hughes, or the winner of Johnson vs. Marquardt would all be good choices IMO. But after his win over Alves, you have to put Story in there too. I think the problem here is that Fitch rightfully feels he should have earned a title shot or at least a rematch with BJ for a title shot, but the UFC and a lot of fans are not over eager to give him one because of his fighting style. But realistically, BJ is NOT going to get a title shot by beating anyone other than Fitch, and I don't think anyone else is going to cut in line ahead of Fitch either after Diaz. Fitch should really try to take one more fight, give it his all, and maybe win the hearts of the fans back with the sort of performance I think he is capable of- to be precise, a dominating finish. If he does that, Story is as good an opponent as any to finally get him another shot at the belt. B_Type13X2: That's cool Mr. Fitch cause no one is really interested in you either...
