Top-ranked UFC welterweight Jon Fitch seemed like he couldn't keep an opponent. After his previous two opponents pulled out with injuries Fitch may have finally caught a break. UFC sophomore Mike Pierce has agreed to step up and fight him at UFC 107 in December. News of the bout was first reported by MMAjunkie.com.
Fitch was first left without an opponent when a knee injury forced Ricardo Almeida to withdraw from their main card bout at UFC 106 on Nov. 21. He was then moved to UFC 107 in favor of a rematch with fellow contender Thiago Alves, however, Alves would also withdraw due to a knee injury.
Pierce was also recently left without a opponent after Fitch's American Kickboxing Academy teammate, Josh Koscheck, pulled out of their main card bout at UFC Fight Night 20 in January. Koscheck was pulled in favor of a co-headlining bout against Anthony Johnson at UFC 106 on Nov. 21.
After dropping just the third loss of his career, and his first in the UFC in his UFC 87 outing against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, Fitch (19-3) has re-entered the title picture after picking up back-to-back wins against Akihiro Gono and, most recently, Paulo Thiago at UFC 100 in July.
Fitch holds an impressive 10-1 mark in the UFC, with notable Octagon wins over Thiago Alves, Brock Larson, Chris Wilson and Diego Sanchez.
Pierce is currently riding a six-fight winning streak, which includes wins over Justin Haskins, Paul Bradley and, most recently, Brock Larson in his UFC debut at UFN 19 on Sept. 16.
Pierce sports a near flawless MMA record of 10-1, with his lone career loss coming against Nathan Coy in June 2008. He has finished six of his 10 career wins via TKO and holds other notable wins in his career over past TUF alums Mike Dolce and Mark Miller.
UFC 107 takes place on Dec. 12 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn and is headlined by a UFC lightweight title bout between current champ B.J. Penn and top contender Diego Sanchez. In addition, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will take on Cheick Kongo in the evening's co-featured bout.
