Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves rematch possible for UFC 111
by Jacob Camargo on December 31, 2009

A second attempt at an anticipated rematch between welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves is in the works for UFC 111 on March 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

News of the possible rematch at UFC 111 was being reported by Alves' agent Malki Kawa at First Round Management on his official Twitter account.

"Guess what boys and girls.... Thiago alves vs john fitch for the 27th!!!!!!" said Kawa in the post.

Alves and Fitch were originally set to rematch at UFC 107 on Dec. 12, however, Alves was forced off of the event with a knee injury. Fitch remained on the card and was matched up against Mike Pierce.

Their first meeting occurred at UFC Fight Night 5 in June 2006, where Fitch walked away with a second-round TKO victory over Alves.

Fitch (21-3) is currently riding a three fight winning streak, which include wins over Akihiro Gono, Paulo Thiago and most recently the aforementioned Mike Pierce at UFC 107 earlier this month. Prior to the wins, he suffered his only Octagon loss against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in a welterweight title bout at UFC 87 in August 2008.

Fitch has put together a 11-1 UFC record over four-years with the promotion, scoring other notable Octagon wins over the likes of Brock Larson, Josh Burkman, Roan Carneiro, Chris Wilson and Diego Sanchez. The American Kickboxing Academy product also holds notable career wins outside the UFC over the likes of Jeff Joslin, Kyle Jensen, Shonie Carter, Jorge Ortiz and Alex Serdyukov.

Alves (16-6) hasn't fought since losing to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100 in July in his first title shot. Prior to the loss, Alves had won seven straight fights in order to earn the title shot with St. Pierre, which included wins over Chris Lytle, Karo Parisyan, Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck.

Since entering the Octagon for the first time in Oct. 2005, Alves has put together a solid 9-3 record. He has competed for other notable promotions throughout his eight-year career including King of the Cage, Bitetti Combat, Hardcore Fighting Championships and Absolute Fighting Championships.

The American Top Team fighter has finished 10 of his 16 career wins by TKO or KO and holds other notable wins over Fabio Holanda, Marcus Davis and Jason Chambers.

UFC 111 will likely be headlined by a UFC welterweight title bout between current champ Georges St. Pierre and challenger Dan Hardy. Also being discussed for the event, is a possible interim heavyweight title bout between Shane Carwin and Frank Mir.
