Jon Jones appeal denied; Jones first loss to Hamill upheld
by Jason Benfari on December 23, 2009

Highly regarded light-heavyweight prospect Jon Jones will have to come to terms with his first professional "loss" after all.

The Jackson's Submission Fighting trained wrecking ball has demolished his way through 10 fighters en route to a 9-1 record, after the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) denied an appeal by Jones' camp to overturn referee Steve Mazagatti's decision to disqualify Jones for the use of illegal elbows in his recent fight against Matt Hamill.

Jones and Hamill went back-and-forth at the beginning of the first round of their TUF 10 Finale match up before Jones scored an impressive takedown on Hamill, (the only time Hamill has ever been taken down in an MMA contest) quickly passed guard, and began reigning down huge blows.

Hamill seemed to be in serious trouble before Jones landed two downward 12-6 elbows to Hamill's face. The elbows where deemed illegal by referee Steve Mazzagatti and the fight was halted partway through the first round.

After conferring with instant replay Mazzagatti disqualified Jones on the basis that the illegal blows caused the end of the fight; a stance basically upheld by the NSAC.

Jones was very humble in defeat during his post fight comments, stating that all great fighters had lost fights and he would learn from the "loss" and come back a better fighter -- a scary prospect for the UFC's light-heavyweight division.
