Jon Jones remains humble in victory; expects an explosive striking war with Brandon Vera
by Giada Esposito on March 01, 2010

"The reason why I think I'm talked about a lot is my style, you know. It's really exciting. I know that it's a spectator sport, and I give them what they want to see. I keep the crowd wild. My style is really wild and random at times, but it's a planned attack. These moves I've been training several times. With Brandon [Vera] being a striker, I'm excited. Me and Brandon are known for having really dynamic styles. The biggest difference between me and Brandon, I'm not going to win my first UFC fight and go calling out Chuck Liddell. I'm very humble and realize there is a lot I need to work on. I don't feel inferior to anyone when it comes to mixed martial arts. Brandon Vera wants a striking war? That is what I'm going to give him [smiles]. You're going to see fireworks. You're going to see two guys go out there in the Octagon and it's going to be blood, sweat and tears." -Jon Jones

Exciting UFC light-heavyweight prospect Jon Jones spoke to UFC.com about his upcoming fight against veteran Brandon Vera when the UFC comes to Versus for the first time on March 21.

Jones will be looking to bounce back from a loss in his last fight, when he suffered a disqualification (DQ) for illegal elbows from the mount after a dominant performance against veteran Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale. Prior to the DQ, Jones had been a perfect 9-0 in his career, including wins in his first three UFC contests.

Jones has proven to be a fan favorite since his first UFC appearance, showcasing a dynamic, unorthodox style, featuring flashy strikes and powerful takedowns. Despite his early success, he has always been noted for his humble, respectful attitude; both in victory and defeat. At just 22-years-of-age, Jones is also one of the youngest fighters in the UFC.

Vera (11-4) is also looking to get back on track after a loss in his last fight, a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Randy Couture at UFC 105. Vera got off to a red-hot start in his UFC career, with four straight wins in the UFC's heavyweight division which propelled him into a title match against then champion Tim Sylvia at UFC 77. Vera lost a unanimous decision to Sylvia in that fight, and after suffering a first-round TKO loss to Fabricio Werdum in his next outing, decided to drop down to fight in the light-heavyweight division.

He has gone 3-2 since moving to light-heavyweight, and has shown little of his old finishing power, with four of those fights ending in decision. Vera should have a chance against Jones to use the dangerous Muay Thai skills that helped him rise to the top earlier in his career.

 |  (4) Comments JujitsWho: I really like this kid. Jones is just one of those fighters that most people love to watch. He is totally right about his style helping to feed his popularity as well. He's not afraid to take a risk here and there, and that translates to exciting fights for the fans. Good article Giada Natalia Baage: What a talent. Jones vs. Machida is something I kinda wanna see. Not as a title fight. But just because it's traditional vs. unorthodox. I'd love seeing the styles match up.
