Jon Jones vs. Vladimir Matyushenko in the works for UFC on Versus 2
by Jacob Camargo on April 29, 2010

A light-heavyweight bout between rising contender Jon Jones and 12-year veteran Vladimir Matyushenko is expected to take place at UFC on Versus 2 in August.

News of the bout was first reported by TheGarv.com, which states that sources close to Team Bombsquad have confirmed that the bout has been verbally agreed to by both camps.

Given Jones' status as the UFC's top current young phenom, the bout will take place on the televised main card portion of the card, and will likely take the night's co-main event slot or may even headline the event.

Jones most recently scored a very impressive first-round TKO win over Brandon Vera in the main event of UFC on Versus 1 last month. Prior to the win, he was dealt his first career loss, suffering a disqualification (Illegal Elbows) loss to Matt Hamill at TUF 10 Finale this past December.

Jones sports a 4-1 UFC record, with wins in his first three fights inside the Octagon over Andre Gusmao, Stephan Bonnar and Jake O'Brien.

The Jackson's Submission Fighting product has put together a near perfect 10-1 MMA record since making his pro debut in April 2008, scoring finishes in eight of his 10 wins including six by TKO or KO.

Matyushenko (24-4) is 11-1 in his last 12 bouts, which includes a current three-fight winning streak. He most recently defeated Eliot Marshall at UFC on Versus 1 on March 21 in Broomfield, Colorado. His lone loss over the successful 12-fight stretch came against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" last January.

"The Janitor" holds a 5-2 UFC record, which includes a 3-2 previous stint with the promotion from June 2001 to Sept. 2003. He sports other Octagon wins over Igor Pokrajac, Yuki Kondo, Travis Wiuff and Pedro Rizzo, while suffering UFC losses against Tito Ortiz and Andrei Arlovski.

Though not officially announced, UFC on Versus 2 will likely take place on August 1 at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it will be the promotion's first ever event in the state.

Other bouts rumored for the card so far, include a lightweight scrap between Takanori Gomi and Joe Stevenson, and a welterweight contest between rising prospects Jake Ellenberger and John Howard. Popular lightweight Clay Guida will also likely be featured on the card.
