Jorge Gurgel vs. Billy Evangelista to headline next Strikeforce Challengers event
by Jacob Camargo on July 22, 2009

Lightweights Jorge Gurgel and Billy Evangelista will likely headline the next Strikeforce Challenger Series event. The news comes courtesy of Sherdog.com.

The event will take place on October 25 from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California and will be broadcast live on Showtime.

Gurgel is coming off an exciting unanimous decision win over Conor Heun in his Strikeforce debut at ShoMMA:"Strikeforce Challenger Series 2" last month in a bout that many thought was the fight of the night. Prior to his debut with Strikeforce, Gurgel was released from the UFC after suffering two straight losses against Cole Miller and Aaron Riley respectively. He went 3-4 in seven fights with the UFC. Overall, Gurgel sports a 13-5 MMA record, with 9 wins coming via submission.

Evangelista suffered the first loss of his career in his last fight, a controversial disqualification to Mike Aina in May at Strikeforce Challengers I. Evangelista was accused of throwing an illegal knee to a downed Aina in the second round. Aina was subsequently unable to continue. Further review revealed the blow had not struck Aina in the head, but rather under the armpit. The CSAC plans to review the bout at the end of August.

Prior to the loss, Evangelista was undefeated at 9-0, including wins over the likes of Ryan Healy, Nam Phan and Luke Caudillo. He will be looking to rebound in what will be his seventh appearance with Strikeforce.
