Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago will face highly-regarded prospect Mamed Khalidov in a non-title bout set for the near complete Sengoku 11 fight card.
News of the bout was first reported by the Polish MMA website MMARocks.pl. According to the report, Jorge Santiago's camp insisted that the status of the fight be labeled "non-title."
Sengoku 11 takes place on Nov. 7 at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan and the event will air in North America on HDNET.
Santiago will be fighting for the first time since January. He was originally set to meet Vitor Belfort at Affliction: "Trilogy," but the promotion canceled the event and has since folded its MMA operations.
Khalidov was also slated to compete on the main card of the "Trilogy" event against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, however, the fight was scrapped from the event in favor of Takanori Gomi vs. Rafaello Oliveira.
Santiago (21-7) is currently riding an impressive nine-fight winnig streak that includes stoppage wins over Jeremy Horn, Trevor Prangley, Siyar Bahadurzada, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Kazuo Misaki, which saw him capture the promotion's middleweight crown. Prior to the winning streak, he went 1-2 in a stint with the UFC, exiting the promotion after losing back-to-back fights against Alan Belcher and Chris Leben.
The American Top Team fighter has competed for other notable promotions during his seven-year career such as King of the Cage, Strikeforce, HOOKnSHOOT, Bodog Fight, and Absolute Fighting Championships. He has finished all but one of his 21 career wins and holds other notable career wins over Andrei Semenov and Chris Liguori.
Khalidov (19-3-1), who recently signed a three-fight deal with World Victory Road, may be riding a more impressive streak as he is unbeaten in his last 17 bouts, which include stoppage wins in 16 of them. He most recently defeated Pride veteran Daniel Acacio in May.
Khalidov may be best known in the U.S. for defeating Jason Guida in his previous bout at a ShoXC event in Oct. 2008. The Polish fighter has finished 18 of his 19 career wins and he holds a notable win over current UFC fighter Igor Pokrajac.
