Jose Aldo: "I don't consider myself the favorite."
by Aaron Butler on March 01, 2010

Mixed martial arts phenom and WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has taken the sport by storm, quickly becoming one of the biggest names the promotion has to offer.

Although involved in MMA since 2004, he was relatively unknown until making his debut for the WEC back in 2008. Since then, the scrappy Brazilian has gone on a tear through the featherweight division, winning six fights in a row, all by TKO, bringing his overall record to a stellar 16-1.

His latest TKO victory over Mike Brown earned him the WEC featherweight title, as well as a spot on many pound-for-pound best-in-the-world lists. Aldo will have his first title defense in April against perennial featherweight contender Urijah Faber. Aldo recently took some time to discuss the match-up with Tatame.com.

You can view a transcribed version of the interview in English below:

Faber has three defeats in his career, two of them to Mike Brown who you knocked out when you won the belt. How do you think this fight is going to go?

"Everyone knows that a fight is a fight and whoever isn't prepared may have trouble. Mike beat him, but he is a different fighter, he has a different style. Faber is explosive, I don't consider myself the favorite. I have to feel the fight."

Are you training differently to defend the title?

"I'm still developing my training, I haven't really thought about it yet. In March we'll focus more on training for the opponent, working on the stand up and take downs, as well as avoiding his strong spots and his wrestling. For right now I'm training jiu-jitsu."

Talk a little about your training in America?

"I was in Sacramento for a month doing a lot of work on my wrestling. I'm always trying to improve. I also had a chance to train boxing with B.J. Penn's trainer."

You were in the corner of Ronys Torres during his debut for the UFC. What did you think about that fight?

"I thought that he fought well standing up. Ronys was perfect, passed the guard, he did everything right. It's true that, sometimes, when we're in the corner that we can't analyze the fight very well, but this situation is different. After the event I watched the fight several times and I'm sure that he won the first and third rounds. He may have lost the second, but that would still be a victory for him. That's why I say we Brazilians have to go for the knockout, don't leave it up to the judges."

And Minotauro's fight, where do you think he went wrong?

"I'm a big fan of Minotauro, and a friend. He had trained very hard and felt confident that he could exchange with Velasquez. Unfortunately Velasquez won. It made me sad."

Who would you point out as the next great talent from the Nova Uniao camp?

"Eduardo Dantas. He's young, and he will blow people away when they see him. He just needs a bit more experience. He has all the tools to be a big star."

When will you be back in the United States?

"Not until the fight in April. All of my training will take place in Brazil, where I have the best stuff and the support of my family."

What can fans expect from Jose Aldo in this title defense?

"I always try to do my best and please my fans, because that's what they pay me for. You can expect an Aldo with a lot of will."

 |  (7) Comments thebutterflybee: Well, he may not think so, but I definitely do! Mtx: Great read JJW. I think Aldo will win for sure, but my guess is this is going to be a closer fight than the Brown fight. Faber matchs up a lot better than Brown so this should really be an interesting fight, can't wait for it :D GO HARD: aldo is easily the favorite, its gonna be an entertaining fight ... thats fo sho! Giada Esposito: Nice article Aaron. I'm looking forward to this fight, although it will be interesting to see how the PPV sales go. JujitsWho: Yeah. I'm a little bummed I have to pay for a WEC card, but I figure I've never been let down with what the WEC usually provides with its fight cards. Paying for one won't be that bad. I can't miss this fight...... its just too good of a match up. Thanks BTW guys. I had fun with his one. I love some Jose Aldo! :)
