“He suffered a cut on his toe [on April 23] and it got infected with bacteria. He went through heavy medical treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills from Sunday to Tuesday. He took the heavy dosage so that he wouldn’t have to take more drugs closer to the fight.” - Andre Pedemerias
It seems as if Jose Aldo suffered from a toe infection leading up to his fight at UFC 129 against Mark Hominick. Speaking with Sherdog.com, Andre Pedemerias from Nova Uniao revealed the injury.
Many fans questioned Aldo's health leading into and immediately following the fight. From his drained look at the weigh-ins to his later round performance, fans felt as if Aldo wasn't 100%.
Pedemerias, however, isn't ready to attribute the injury to Aldo's poor performance.
“I can’t say whether [Aldo taking antibiotics] affected his performance. I’m not a doctor,” Pederneiras said. “I prefer to give credit to Hominick’s effort for taking the fight that deep, rather than saying if the medicine affected him or not.”
Rumors began to swirl following the fight after Brazilian viewers picked up on some questionable dialog between Aldo and his corner. Those fluent in Portuguese heard Aldo say that taking more antibiotics would have improved his performance in the fight. His teammate Marlon Sandro responded with the following.
“Antibiotics wouldn’t have helped at all. You’re the champion, kid. F**k the antibiotics. Everything is OK. You fought well, smooth and composed.”
