Joseph Benavidez vs. Dominick Cruz officially confirmed for WEC 42
by Jacob Camargo on June 18, 2009

The WEC has recently confirmed a previously reported bantamweight bout between Joseph Benavidez and Dominick Cruz. The fight will appear as part of the main card at WEC 42 on August 9.

Although not officially proclaimed by the WEC, the Benavidez-Cruz match-up could get a bantamweight title shot against the winner of Miguel Torres vs. Brian Bowles.

Since entering the WEC, Joseph Benavidez has pushed his overall MMA record to 10-0 with recent decision wins over Danny Martinez and the very tough Jeff Curran at WEC 40 in April. Those two wins were the first decision wins of his career with his previous 8 bouts being stoppage victories. Prior to entering the WEC, Benavidez opened eyes in the MMA world by defeating Junya Kudo at DREAM 5.

Dominick Cruz is currently on a three-fight win streak, with his last win coming against Ivan Lopez also at WEC 40 in April. Crew is now 3-1 with the WEC and sports an almost flawless MMA record at 13-1. His only loss came to Benavidez's Team Alpha Male teammate, Urijah Faber, in his WEC debut at WEC 26 in March of 2007.

WEC 42 will hail from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and will be headlined by a bantamweight title bout between current champ Miguel Torres and undefeated top contender Brian Bowles. You can catch the event live on Versus.
