A welterweight rematch between Josh Koscheck and Paulo Thiago is being targeted for UFC 109 on Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. News of the bout was first reported by MMA.FanHouse.com.
The bout will likely be featured on the televised main card portion of UFC 109. Also, the match up is a do-over from their first meeting at UFC 95 last February, which saw Thiago score a shocking upset win over Koscheck via first-round TKO.
Koscheck (14-4) has won his last two bouts, defeating Frank Trigg at UFC 103 in September and, most recently, scoring an impressive, yet bizarre, second-round submission win over Anthony Johnson at UFC 106 on Nov. 21. The win over Johnson earned him two fight night bonuses, which totaled a staggering $140,000.
Koscheck has fought nearly his entire five-year career with the UFC, fighting 16 of his 18 career bouts with the promotion. The American Kickboxing Academy product holds a 12-4 UFC record, scoring notable Octagon wins over Dustin Hazelett, Pete Spratt, Chris Lytle, Dave Menne, Yoshiyuki Yoshida and Diego Sanchez.
Thiago is also coming off of a win at UFC 106, defeating UFC newcomer Jacob Volkmann via unanimous decision. Prior to the win, he suffered his first career loss at the hands of Jon Fitch at UFC 100 in July. Thiago sports a 2-1 record in three tough fights with the UFC, with his other Octagon win coming over Koscheck.
The Jungle Fight veteran sports a nearly flawless 12-1 MMA record, with nine of those wins being by stoppage, including seven by submission.
Though not officially announced, UFC 109 is rumored to be headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between UFC Hall of Famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman. Also, middleweight contenders Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt will look to get closer to a title shot when they face off at the event.
Other bouts slated for the main card include a welterweight bout between Matt Serra and Frank Trigg, as well as a middleweight bout between Demian Maia and Dan Miller.
