Nine-time UFC veteran Josh Neer will step in for the injured Sean Sherk and face Gleison Tibau at UFC 104 in October. The news comes courtesy of a report at Sherdog.com.
According to the report, Sherk suffered a shoulder injury in training that will sideline him for about four weeks severely cutting into his preparation for Tibau. He was set to fight for the first time in the state of California since testing positive for steroids following his win over Hermes Franca at UFC 73 in July 2007. Sherk was looking to rebound from a loss he suffered against Frankie Edgar at UFC 98 in May.
Neer (25-8-1) is 2-2 in his third stint with the UFC and was most recently defeated by Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101 last month. Prior to the loss, he defeated TUF 6 winner Mac Danzig at UFN 17. Neer sports a 4-5 record with the UFC, with other wins over the likes of Melvin Guillard, Joe Stevenson and Din Thomas. The Extreme Challenge and IFL veteran has finished 21 of his 25 career wins, and he holds other notable career wins over Derrick Noble and Forrest Petz.
Tibau (19-6) is coming off a highly controversial loss against Melvin Guillard at TUF 9 finale in June. Prior to the loss, he won two straight against Rich Clementi and Jeremy Stephens. The American Top Team product has put together a 5-4 record during his time with the UFC and holds notable wins over Fabricio Camoes, Terry Etim and Thiago Alves.
UFC 104 takes place on October 24 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California and the main card will air live on pay-per-view. The event will be headlined by a UFC light-heavyweight title bout between current champ Lyoto Machida and challenger, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. In addition, talented undefeated heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez will take on IFL and Affliction veteran Ben Rothwell in a heavyweight showdown.
